SEND YOUR BEST ANGEL FOR MOMMA!
Will you please play the song as you read the story!
I remember the day my daddy got hurt while driving a truck. The police came to the door and told my momma that daddy was hurt and in the hospital. He was chaining down a load of pipe when one of the chains broke and the pipe came down on him. It seemed like forever before daddy was well and was able to come home. Finally one day an ambulance brought my dad home and when he got out he was in a wheel chair. He would never be able to walk again.
From that day on momma took it on her own to be the bread-winner of the house. I remember her and my daddy talking about her taking over the truck and how he wished she would just sell it. But not momma, she knew it was the only way of keeping a roof over our heads and food on our table. Times were getting real hard and daddy could not afford insurance and the bills from his accident were adding up fast.
Dad had taken momma on the road a lot before I came along and she was a pretty good driver. One day momma packed up the Ice Chest and put it in the truck. She told me to be good and to listen to what dad had to say. She told me she would be back in a week or so. We both watched as momma climbed up into the big semi just like daddy use to, it was like she had been driving for years. It seemed like a long time till momma came back home.
Just like daddy, momma would come home telling all the events that had happened on the road. I watched as it saddened my dad as she told all the truck driver stories. For he knew his days on the road were gone for ever. As the years went by momma became well-known from the south to the north trucking down that old road. We were all so proud of momma.
As time went by I could see my dad slowly going away. The sadness in his eyes became heavier everyday. One day while I was playing out side the angels came for my daddy. As I came in the house I could tell he was at rest. Grandpa lived down the road but it seemed like it took forever to get there. As I walked through the gate I guess Grandpa saw the look on my face. I remember him saying it will be all right little man. The only words I could say were, Grandpa the angels have come for daddy. Not a word was said as he held me oh so tight. Well from that day on when momma left out on the truck, Grandpa would come and stay to keep watch over me until momma got back home. I would listen as he talked about the old days and every night me and Grandpa would play checkers.
On a cold dark night with the wind shivering through the woods and almost blowing the truck to the side of the road, momma knew the travel would soon become rough. Momma was a really good driver and she knew the road so well. Momma knew she was coming upon a steep curve up ahead so she began to step on the brakes but the brakes did not work! As the curve came upon her she tried harder and harder to stomp on the brake pedal but it would not go down. As the truck went into the curve it slid off the edge of the road and over the cliff. The big truck layed on its side. That’s the night that the angels came for my momma.
I never will forget the night the police came to the door to tell Grandpa the news of the wreck. It was like the whole world come to an end. Grandpa just stood still not saying a word until he looked at me. With a trembling voice I heard Grandpa say, “Come here son.” I could tell as the tears roll down Grandpa’s face that momma would not be coming back home again.
A couple of years later Grandpa passed away and the state come and took me away. I would stay at one place for a while and then they would move me again.
I have grown up now but I always prayed that some day I would see her in heaven again. See I was only 10 years old the day the angels came for Momma. The accident report reads that she was going too fast to take the curve on the ice and snow. I knew that was not like momma to drive too fast, for she was always a careful driver. The truth is the Treadle Valve stuck and would not allow the brakes to apply. Today I still remember the night the angels came and got my momma!
