WHY ME LORD?
A little boy gets on the school bus with his lunch box and heads off to school. As he gets on the bus he heads to the back to a seat by himself. He’s having a hard time today as he looks out the window while the bus goes down the road. He was wishing the day was already over so he could go home.Today at school is Father’s Day, a day for all fathers to come and enjoy the day with their children. But today, just like the last three years, the little boy will have no father beside him to enjoy this special day or to visit with the other children.
The school bus finally gets to the school and the little boy is the last one to get off the bus. All the other children are talking and so excited about today because their fathers will be coming today for the special event. The little boy goes to his class room and sits and watches the other children as they are joking, laughing, throwing paper airplanes, and feeling good about what is going to happen today. The little boy just sits quietly and just takes it all in.
The little boy tries so hard not to let his sorrow show as he remembers back in the day when his father was alive and how he could not wait for the weekend just to see that big semi truck and trailor come down the lane. The little boy’s father would honk the horn and you could hear the sound of the air brakes release as his father stopped the big truck. Finally the little boy’s father would turn off the lights and step out of the truck. Remembering back when he would run to his father and his father would pick him up and lift him way up high in the air and then hold on to him and hug him so tight. His unforgettable memories of hearing his father say, “whatcha been doing little trucker!” The little boy would smile and say, “waiting for you to come and go fishing.”
One day a policeman came to the little boy’s house with a message that the father was in a semi truck accident. The policeman said something went wrong and caused the truck to lose control and go over a cliff. The truck’s air brake valve in the floor had stuck and the driver had no brakes. The witness said he went into a wall of rocks before hitting a greyhound bus in the rear. He tried to slow the semi truck and trailor down. As he was going down the mountain his truck was rubbing against the big rocks and finally went into the ditch and over the side of the mountain.
What a sad day it was, the little boy’s father was laid to rest, another trucker gone to trucker heaven. But not just a trucker. This time it was the little boy’s hero, a man who the little boy will never be able to forget! This time the trucker was his father. As the little boy tries so hard to hold back the tears and the pain that is laying so heavily in his heart, he can’t help but whisper the words, “Why me Lord, why did it have to be my father?”
The little boy just sit quietly as the other children left the classroom to join their fathers. The teacher looked at the little boy and said, “are you going to go and join the other children and visit your father?” The little boy did not say a word. Politely the teacher asks, “why so sad my child, could your father not get the day off from work to be here for this special occasion?” The teacher patiently waited for the little boy’s response.
With eyes filled with tears the little boy said, “My father does not live with us any more he went to be a truck driver in heaven.” The teacher sit quietly as she looked at the little boy. She could see the sadness in the little boys face, the hurt and pain that was showing through with every word that the little boy was saying. Suddenly the teacher’s eyes filled with tears and she began to cry when the little boy looked at the teacher and said, “I ASK THE LORD EVERY NIGHT WHY ME? Why do I have to live without a father? Can you tell me why?”
The little boy began to cry as he spoke to the teacher, Please teacher, could you tell me why some one would make an air brake valve that would stop working and is causing so many accidents? Why do families have to go without their fathers because of a defective air brake valve? I see all the other children laughing and having fun today with their fathers. Why will I never get the chance to be thrown up in the air by my father and feel his warm tight hugs again or have the enjoyment of going fishing with my father? WHY ME? Can you tell me why teacher? I ASK THE LORD AND HE NEVER RESPONDED. The teacher looked down at the little boy as tears were running down his cheeks. The teacher was so heartbroken by the sad words from the little boy. Her mind searched for the words to try to comfort the little boy but she couldn’t find them. The teacher had no words! Come here my child. As she held the child so firmly in her arms she could feel his little body trembling as he tried to deal with the pain and sorrow, she knew she did not have the answers that the little boy was so desperately seeking. All she could do was hold him and try to comfort him.
The school day was finally over and all the children left with their fathers but the little boy. Today the little boy was the only one the bus driver had to take home. The little boy sit quietly as he rode the school bus home all alone.
To the little boy the day seemed to have lasted forever but night time finally came and once again the little boy knelt down beside his bed to say his prayers and his words tonight were the same as many nights past……………………….
